Cross Platform Development

Cross platform developments allow different software systems – typically Windows, Mac and Linux (Android is built on top of Linux) – to exchange information, usually by the creation of a single program which operates on all these operating systems.

Developing a cross-platform (or multi-platform) program can be a time-consuming task because different operating systems have different application programming interfaces (API). Furthermore, software written for one particular operating system may not automatically work on all architectures that the operating system supports.

Bespoke business applications that run on all three software systems may need to be a Web-based system, because Web applications are accessible from web browsers within different operating systems. A Web-based system uses development tools and technologies that include: AJAX, ASP (Microsoft Web Server (IIS) Scripting language), ASP.NET (Microsoft’s Web Application Framework – successor of ASP), ActionScript, CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), ColdFusion (Adobe’s Web Application Framework), CGI, HTML5, Java, JavaScript, JSP, Node.js, OSGI, Perl, PHP, PSGI, Python, Ruby – and so on.
